So are you a tech enthusiast who finds VPN and VPS confusing and needs to learn the difference between them? Don’t worry if you’re scratching your head because you’re not alone! It’s easy to get these two terms mixed up, but they’re quite different.

In this blog, we will break down what a VPN and a VPS are and help you determine which one you need.

    What is a VPN?

Alright, let’s dive into the world of VPNs! So, a VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. Essentially, it’s like your own private tunnel on the internet. It allows you to securely connect to the internet through a server that encrypts all your online traffic and keeps your sensitive information safe from prying eyes.

    Types of VPN

There are a few different types of VPNs, but the three main ones are Remote Access VPNs, Site-to-Site VPNs, and Client-to-Site VPNs.

Remote Access VPNs: Remote Access VPNs are ideal for people who need to access their company’s network while working remotely.

Site-to-Site VPNs: Site-to-Site VPNs are great for connecting multiple networks.

Client-to-Site VPNs: Client-to-Site VPNs are ideal for users who want to access a specific network or website from outside the network.

    Advantages of using VPNs

    • VPNs provide security and privacy by encrypting online activity and preventing data theft.
    • VPNs make you anonymous online, allowing you to browse the web without revealing your identity or location.
    • VPNs can bypass geo-restrictions by enabling you to connect to servers in different locations and access content unavailable in your country.
    • VPNs are cost-effective compared to expensive security software or hardware.
    • Many VPNs offer free versions or trials for users to try before purchasing.

    What is a VPS?

Think of it as your private slice of a larger server. With a VPS, you get all the benefits of having your dedicated server without buying one.

A VPS uses virtualization technology to create multiple virtual servers on a single physical server. Each virtual server operates independently, with its own operating system, storage, and resources.

    Types of VPS

Like VPN, there are different types of VPS out there, but the three main ones are Managed VPS, Unmanaged VPS, and Cloud VPS.

Managed VPS: Managed VPS is perfect for people who want someone else to handle server maintenance and updates.

Unmanaged VPS: Unmanaged VPS is great for people who are comfortable managing their servers.

Cloud VPS: Cloud VPS is perfect for people who want to scale up or down as needed.

    Advantages of using VPS

    • VPS is cost-effective compared to maintaining your physical server.
    • VPS allows for easy scalability, meaning you can adjust resources as needed.
    • With VPS, you have complete control over your server, including software installation and configurations.
    • VPS is generally more secure than shared hosting, as each virtual server operates independently.

    Differences Between VPN And VPS

    AspectVPNVPS
PurposeSecurely connect to the internet through a server.Rent a virtual server with dedicated resources.
TechnologyVPN software and encryption protocols.Virtualization technology.
SecurityEncrypts online traffic and keeps data safe from prying eyes.Provides a dedicated server environment that is isolated from other users.
PerformanceSlower due to encryption and server location.Faster due to dedicated resources and server location.
CostTypically less expensive than VPS.Typically more expensive than VPN.
ScalabilityLimited, as the number of available servers is finite.Highly scalable, as resources can be added or removed as needed.
Ease of useGenerally easy to use with user-friendly software.Requires more technical knowledge to set up and manage.

    Use cases for VPNs:

    1. Accessing restricted content: You know when you want to watch some of that sweet, sweet content unavailable in your country? A VPN can help you out by letting you connect to a server in a different location so that you can bypass those pesky restrictions.
    2. Protecting privacy and anonymity: If you’re worried about your online privacy and want to keep your browsing activity private, a VPN can encrypt your online traffic and keep your data safe from prying eyes. So you can browse with peace of mind.
    3. Security in public Wi-Fi networks: If you’re always on the go and use public Wi-Fi networks, a VPN can help you stay safe from hackers and other nasty dudes who may be snooping on the network.

    Use cases for VPSs:

    1. Hosting websites and applications: A VPS is the way to go if you want to host a website or application with serious performance and security. You get dedicated resources that are all yours, so you don’t have to worry about other users hogging up the server.
    2. Testing and development environments: If you’re a developer and need to test your applications in a dedicated environment, a VPS can provide the resources you need without the hassle of managing a physical server. You can also quickly scale up or down as needed.
    3. Running applications that require specific configurations: If you’re running an application that requires particular configurations or software that may not be available on shared hosting, a VPS gives you the flexibility and control you need to run your application the way you want.

How to set up a VPS

    1. First, log in to your Reseller account using your ID and password to set up VPS hosting. Once you’re in, click “Buy” in the top right corner to purchase orders.
    2. To get VPS hosting, you need to have a domain name linked to it. So, we’ll purchase both the domain and hosting. To buy a domain, go to “Select Product” and choose “Domain Registration.” Check if the domain you want is available and add Privacy Protection if you want it.
    3. Next, purchase the VPS hosting by selecting “Linux KVM VPS” in the same drop-down list. Please enter the domain name to which you want to link it and specify the product details. Choose any add-ons you wish, like cPanel or WHMCS. If you don’t like any add-ons, select “None.”
    4. Once you’ve bought your domain and VPS hosting, they’ll automatically be added to your control panel. To access them, go to the main dashboard and click “Products,” then “List All Orders,” and choose the VPS hosting order.
    5. You don’t have to set up your VPS server with ResellerClub manually. It’s provisioned instantly after you buy the order. To access it, click on the “Admin Details” tab, and you can manage your orders using the Server Management Panel, WHMCS, and cPanel.

    Conclusion

So, there you have it, folks! VPNs and VPSs may sound similar, but they serve very different purposes. A VPN is the way to go if you want to access restricted content, protect your privacy, or secure public Wi-Fi networks. On the other hand, if you need to host websites, run specific applications, or create testing environments, a VPS is what you need. So, choose wisely and enjoy the benefits of these technologies!
